The German Maritime Search and Rescue Service (German: Deutsche Gesellschaft zur Rettung Schiffbrüchiger - DGzRS; lit. German Society for the Rescue of Shipwrecked Persons) is responsible for Search and Rescue in German territorial waters in the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, including the Exclusive Economic Zone.

The headquarters and the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre of the Society are located in Bremen. It was founded in Kiel on 29 May 1865. It owns 61 lifeboats at 54 stations which are operated by 185 employed crew members and 800 volunteers. The society has about 2000 engagements every year. Up to 2005, it rescued approximately 72,000 persons. In 2004 it saved 368 lives, rescued 837 persons from critical situations and carried out 343 medical transports. The DGzRS is entirely financed by membership fees, private donations and legacies.

Writer and honorary member Nikolai von Michalewsky has immortalized the DGzRS in his series of science fiction novels by taking it as the model for his “Independent Society for Saving Spacewrecked”. WIKIPEDIA

In Köpenick

Am letzten Tag fuhr ich nach Köpenick, um einem besonderen deutschen Helden meinen Respekt zu zollen.

On my last day in Berlin I visited a very special German folk hero in Köpenick:

Friedrich Wilhelm Voigt (13 February 1849 – 3 January 1922) was a German impostor who, in 1906, masqueraded as a Prussian military officer, rounded up a number of soldiers under his “command", and "confiscated” more than 4,000 marks from a municipal treasury. Although he served two years in prison, he became a folk hero as The Captain of Köpenick and was pardoned by Kaiser Wilhelm II. WIKIPEDIA

I really enjoy the rides on Berlin’s trams and double-decker busses. For a reasonable €7.00 you can explore Berlin all day long by tram, bus, underground, and rapid transit line (S-Bahn).

Eine improvisierte Foto-Session • Photo shoot at short notice

Es ist schon eine lange Zeit her, daß ich Tim Lothar und Holger ‘HoBo’ Daub fotografiert habe. Gestern mußten wir eine Session kurzfristig arrangieren, damit sie für ihre Auftritte mit János Mazura neue Bilder verwenden können.
Zwischen dem Aufbau und dem Soundcheck nutzen wir die Zeit. Ich denke, wir hatten trotzdem viel Spaß!

It has been quite a while since my last photo shoot with Tim Lothar und Holger ‘HoBo’ Daub. Yesterday we had to arrange a shoot at short notice to include János Mazura, who is joining them for some gigs. Between setting up the stage and sound check we managed to capture some images and have a lot of fun.
