Mahnmal St.-Nikolai-Kirche • The Church of St. Nicholas

Um diesen ereignisreichen Regentag abzuschließen, besuchte ich wieder einmal das Mahnmahl St.-Nikolai-Kirche.

To round off this eventful rainy day, I once more visited the ruins of the St. Nicholas Church.

The Church of St. Nicholas (German: St.-Nikolai-Kirche) was a Gothic Revival cathedral that was formerly one of the five Lutheran Hauptkirchen (main churches) in the city of Hamburg, Germany. The original chapel, a wooden building, was completed in 1195. It was replaced by a brick church in the 14th century, which was eventually destroyed by fire in 1842. The church was completely rebuilt by 1874, and was the tallest building in the world from 1874 to 1876. It was designed by the English architect George Gilbert Scott.

The bombing of Hamburg in World War II destroyed the bulk of the church. The removal of the rubble left only its crypt, its site and tall-spired tower, largely hollow save for a large set of bells. These ruins continue to serve as a memorial and an important architectural landmark. When Hamburg residents mention the Nikolaikirche, it is generally to this church that they are referring, and not the new Hauptkirche dedicated to Saint Nicholas in the Harvestehude district. The remains of the old church are the second-tallest structure in Hamburg. In 2005, an elevator was installed to a 75.3-metre-high (247 ft) platform. Wikipedia

Viele Jahre lang war der NIKON Service Point Norderstedt (Fotogeräteservice Holger Maerz GmbH) unentbehrlich, wenn Kameras repariert werden mußten. In den letzten zwanzig Jahren war ich mehrfach Kunde und wurde stets zu meiner Zufriedenheit bedient.

Heute mußte ich mit Bedauern feststellen, daß die Firma nicht mehr existiert. Eine Stadt wie Hamburg mit ihrem großem Umland benötigt unbedingt einen NIKON Service Point.

Die anstehende Reparatur meiner zweiten D500 wird nun in Düsseldorf ausgeführt. Calumet Photographic half dankenswerterweise mit Rat aus und schickte die Kamera zur Reparatur ein.

Meinen Dank an Holger Maerz und seine Mitarbeiter. Sie werden nicht nur von mir vermißt werden.

For many years the NIKON Service Point Norderstedt (Fotogeräteservice Holger Maerz GmbH) was indispensable when cameras had to be repaired. I have been a customer several times over the last twenty years and have always been served to my satisfaction.

Today I had to realise with regret that the company no longer exists. A city like Hamburg with its large surrounding area absolutely needs a NIKON Service Point.

The pending repair of my second D500 will now be carried out in Düsseldorf. Calumet Photographic thankfully helped out with advice and sent the camera in for repair.

My thanks to Holger Maerz and his staff. I am not the only one that is going to miss you.

U-Bahnstation Alsterdorf

Wenn alles nach Plan verläuft, werden die Renovierungsarbeiten Ende April abgeschlossen sein. Ab morgen ist die Station für ca. drei Wochen für die restlichen Arbeiten geschlossen.

Hopefully, the renovation will be completed by the end of April. Tomorrow the station will be closed for three weeks for the final work.

Dieses Jahr fing ich mit einer neuen Serie über die Hamburger U-Bahn an.

It is no longer used as a water tower, but has been converted for residential purposes. With a height of 50.25 m, it clearly towers over the low residential buildings in Lokstedt and is thus a landmark of the district.”

 

Keine neue Website • No new website

 Meine Website 2014–2021

Ich habe lange überlegt, ob ich eine neue Website baue. Keiner der Anbieter aus Deutschland, bei denen ich es versuchte, konnte meinen Ansprüchen gerecht werden. foliodrop hat mich verwöhnt. Außerdem waren jene Anbieter unverhältnismäßig teuer. Meine Bilder finden überwiegend ihr Publikum durch diesen Blog; die alte Website war ein netter Luxus.

Meinen Instagram-Account betrachte ich eher als Spielwiese mit gelegentlichen Hinweisen auf diesen Blog. Eine ähnliche Funktion hat mein tumblr-Blog, der sich ganz auf Fotografie beschränkt, allerdings abgespeckt.

I thought long and hard about building a new website. None of the providers from Germany that I tried could meet my requirements. foliodrop had spoiled me. In addition, those providers were disproportionately expensive. My images mostly find their audience through this blog; the old website was a nice luxury.

I see my Instagram account more as a playground with occasional references to this blog. My tumblr blog, which is entirely limited to photography, has a similar function, but slimmed down.
